Learn How Calumite Slag
Helps Your Business
How Calumite Slag is Used
Calumite Slag is used in all types of soda-lime-silica glass production. Calumite Slag usage depends on factors such as
glass color, glass composition, and local raw materials. The level of Calumite Slag is expressed as a percentage of the
dry sand weight. In flint container glass, Calumite Slag is typically 6-7% of the dry sand weight. In green container glass,
it is 10-13%, while in amber glass, up to 18% of the dry sand weight is used.
In float glass, Calumite Slag is typically used at 4-8% of the dry sand weight. Use of the redox number concept, pioneered
by previous employees of Calumite Company, LLC, and now accepted by glassmakers worldwide, ensures the optimum level of Calumite
slag is utilized to improve redox control in the furnace and final glass composition.
Maximizing the Benefits of using Calumite Slag
Many of the benefits of using Calumite Slag , including improved melting efficiency, reduced process CO2 emissions
and improved color stabilization are always achieved when Calumite Slag is used. Other benefits can be maximized depending
on the specific priorities of the glassmaker at the time, for example reducing energy consumption or improving glass quality.
